How do you explain a gap on your resume?

Having a gap of time on a resume is not unusual and will not necessarily hurt you unless you explain the gap. Legitimate reasons can include becoming a full time parent, a career hiatus to care for an ailing parent, or returning to school for a degree or certification. If it was related to health reasons it could scare off some employers. Gaps in many occupations will not necessarily lower your market value unless you are in a technical field where technology changes quickly. Under this scenario, it may be wiser to pursue a position outside of technology.
