Always avoid job specialization.

In most positions one of the biggest career mistakes is working in an occupation and/or industry that is so specialized that your skill sets are rarely, if ever, transferable. The reason this is so important, is because job security no longer exists. Being overspecialized was fine in an era with lifetime job security. However, professionals are looking for new jobs every 3-5 years. Given this fact, it is critical to acquire skills that are useful in many occupations and industries.
